See a unique aspect of Jones Beach through Robert Moses in Robert Caro's "The Power Broker"

The Old Croton Aqueduct crossing the Harlem River via the Highbridge that was built in 1848 has been under renovation and will reopen to cyclists and pedestrians Summer of 2015

The city has more than 900 miles of bike lanes across its five boroughs, with more than 600 of those on city streets. And Citi Bikes, the bike-sharing program sponsored by Citibank, launched in Manhattan in 2013.

CyclePhotography

Welcome

Welcome to my "Cycle Photography" Web Site. Some people in retirement look to write the "Great American Novel" and others their Biography. I decided to go with something a little more non traditional and modern. Too write, and portray in images, two aspects of my life ....my photography and my cycling....and at the same time introduce to some the wonders of New York in a pesonal web site.  All the images in this site are part of my personal collection from the past 9 years and were taken while cycling New York City and the surrounding areas of Long Island, New Jersey, Westchester, Dutchess and Ulster Counties.

Cycling the Other New York

The "Other New York" is defined as New York City outside of Manhattan and.....the surrounding areas mentioned in my "Welcome" statement ........as so many people consider Manhattan, only, to be ..."The City"

The New York Shore line

........and what a coastline it is. The city "ocean" coastline considered to be the Atlantic Beach Bridge to Breezy Point and the Coney Island Pennisula at 20 miles .... just outside the city Long Beach and the Jones Beach pennisulas at 14 miles and the rugged Long Island Sound coastline from Pelham Bay to Rye at another 14 miles. That's almost 50 miles of beautiful cycling coastline!!

Cycle New York Parks

Cycling!! ...allowed me to see the Parks Of New York City and it's intimate surrounding areas in a different perspective. Whether a starting point or a destination point I discovered more, about our parks, than at any other point in my life through cycling. ....and the Parks outside NYC in Westchester

and LI are just as beautiful

Country North of NYC

Long and unobstructed the bike trails just north of New York City are quite unique. From the monster, (47 miles), South and North County Trails as one complete trail with one gap in Elmsford, to the beautiful Dutchess County Rail Trail and the  spectacular Croton Dam, north of NYC are some of the best trails in the Northeast.

Cycling Manhattan

Nothing can be more grand than being able to circumvent the island of Manhattan on a bike.. The Hudson River Greenway takes you from Battery Park up the West side along the Hudson to Inwood just north of Harlem, free from motor traffic. The East River Bikeway starts also from Battery Park North  along the East River. Aside from a few gaps one can now circumvent Manhattan (35 miles) quite easily. You can also use the New York Ferry as part your trip in NYC. .....and Brooklyn and Harlem are some of the best urban cycling in the world.

Cycling Events

My Nov 19th 2012 ride from Prospect Park, carrying 75 pounds of food and supply to the needy residents of Far Rockaway after Hurricane Sandy, will always be remembered. The Ride around Manhattan Benefit for MS was just another of my benefit rides that i will cherish.

A Natural Disaster

Hurricane Sandy! ...what can one say about the "Perfect Storm". Coming late in the hurricane season  with that 45 degree turn into NJ it was combined with another weather system and one of the highest tides ever recorded. The storm surge was "Tsumani like". Riding through the aftermath was "jaw dropping". The reconstruction evolution continues today.

Let's Ride .....and Walk

Next to Pelham Bay Park Caumset is just as spectacular. Both are geologically significant.

As Terminal Morains, the farthest advance of a glacial ice sheet, rock formations and cliffs create awsome views. Jones Beach West is much different as it resembles the Cape Cod Provincelands.
